- 20th century-2022
Personal papers of Holocaust survivor Tom Kubie who came to the UK (Scotland, later Leeds) with his immediate family in 1939 to escape Nazi persecution.
There is a mixture of physical, digitised and born-digital material comprising recordings, papers, correspondence, ephemera, photographs, objects and publications. These relate to the extended Kubie and Friedmann family: Tom, his parents Nina (née Banyai) and Otto, his brothers William (known as Bill or Billy), Robert and Michael; his uncle Paul Kubie, aunt Susie (née Singer) and cousin Stephan; his aunt Hilde Friedmann (née Kubie), uncle Hugo and cousins Hans Georg and Liselotte; his grandparents Dr Maurus and Franziska Banyai.
The Kubie collection was donated in several tranches between 2008-2025 and contains duplication of material between the original papers and digitised material. Some material is in German, Czech, Hungarian and French. Please note the collection contains potentially offensive language and references to child death and other distressing material.
Since the collection was catalogued in 2023, significant accruals of papers, photographs and objects, including restituted books that belonged to Hugo Friedmann, have been donated. These will be catalogued in 2026.
The records are divided into the following sub-series:
HCN/1/TK/1: Recordings
HCN/1/TK/2: Papers and correspondence
HCN/1/TK/3: Wartime correspondence from Theresienstadt ghetto-camp
HCN/1/TK/4: Photographs and postcards
HCN/1/TK/5: Objects
HCN/1/TK/6: Books and publications
