- 1930s-2010s
Personal papers of Holocaust survivor Rachel Mendel, who emigrated from Germany as a 4-year-old refugee in 1939, before moving to Northeast England around 1946 and later settling in Leeds. The papers chiefly relate to Rachel’s German-Jewish parents Dr Henry (1898-1968) and Dr Alice Mendel (1903-1993, née [Weib]) who were separated from 1939 for seven years, during which time Henry lived in England, and Alice and Rachel lived in Switzerland.
The records are arranged in three sub-series:
HCN/1/RM/1: Correspondence and assorted papers, 1938-1952
HCN/1/RM/2: Papers relating to the Netherlands, 1933
HCN/1/RM/3: ‘Behind barbed wire’ (2009)
